EQT & EdgeConneX

Launching EV charging infrastructure at scale, quickly

INDUSTRY
EV Infrastructure. Clean Energy. Emerging Tech.
Description
EQT Group is the world’s third-largest private equity company, with ~$227 billion in assets and a focus on purpose-driven companies in technology, healthcare, energy, and digital infrastructure. EdgeConneX is a global data center provider specializing in high-powered, purpose-built digital infrastructure. They’re known as the pioneers in redefining where and how digital infrastructure is deployed at scale and speed.
Services
Strategy. Branding. Marketing Management.

What’s better than a market need and a big “a-ha” moment? EdgeConneX, a global data center developer, had that moment as electric vehicle fleets gained momentum, but it quickly became clear that charging infrastructure at scale would not keep up. Companies would need reliable, power-ready charging stations to transition to electrification, but building that infrastructure in-house would be expensive and complicated.

EdgeConneX had encountered this familiar challenge before. And just as they had solved the problem of deploying digital infrastructure at scale, they saw an opportunity to create a business that could apply the same approach to electrification infrastructure. EQT, already an investor in EdgeConneX, agreed. The plan was clear: together, they would create a company to bring this idea to life.

Not long after, that’s where we came in.

Given Flo.’s background, we had a few things to offer:

  • We understood digital infrastructure and how to position technically complex businesses
  • We had built strong brands for high-growth companies many times before, and we knew how to balance speed with credibility
  • We had the brand and the marketing expertise to create a company that felt established on day one yet could scale and adapt as the business evolved

Through research, workshops, and many collaborations, we worked with the leadership team to define the business, establish what was important to the market, and create a brand appealing to future customers and employees.

The challenges we faced:

  • Speed mattered: a few competitors had similar ideas, and even after establishing the company, developing the infrastructure would take time.
  • Credibility was imperative: in some ways, it was a new company, but in others, it wasn’t. They weren’t experimenting with EV charging; they knew what they were doing and needed to look like it from the start.
  • The journey was complex: fleet electrification involved large enterprises with complex decision-making processes and multiple stakeholders. The brand had to be clear and compelling from day one.

Through all of this, Voltera was born.

  • We developed a company name and brand identity that was both simple and distinct in the market.
  • We guided the messaging to speak directly to customers with a clear, value-driven approach—no fluff.
  • We built Voltera’s digital presence, entering the market with the strength of an established industry leader.
  • We helped Voltera define its guiding principles to strengthen its culture and attract top talent.
  • We partnered with sales to develop the collateral needed to engage in meaningful conversations.

And the result was a vision that became a reality. Voltera launched stronger and faster than any of the competition. There was an instant buzz and early traction with a strong foundation that could be leveraged as the internal marketing team was built.

Today, Voltera has over 21 sites with 115+ MWs of charging capacity under development. EQT has made a multibillion-dollar equity commitment to continue to grow the business, and Voltera has attracted additional funding from others as well. The business continues to scale, and in our view, it’s only beginning to make its mark on the future of carbon-free transportation.
